Ready to learn a new musical instrument? Learn to play the acoustic guitar! No previous musical experience necessary for this class.

You will learn how to to care for your instrument including tuning and string set up.

This is a 6 week session that builds upon itself every week.  It is open to adults and to teens ages 14+.  The course fee is for lessons only; students will need to bring their own acoustic guitar.

  • Where to find an affordable starter instrument? Students can get reasonably priced guitars at area music stores or on Amazon. Or borrow one from a friend!

  • Get strings at any local music store or on Amazon.

  • Finally, this is not a requirement but it is highly recommended you purchase the course book we'll be working through: Acoustic Guitar for Beginners Deluxe Edition. You can find it on Amazon

About your artisan instructor, Melissa Buck:

Melissa Buck is a skilled bluegrass/Americana musician. She has taught several classes at the Columbia Arts Building and has played many live performances here as well!

She has experience in teaching courses in Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer, bluegrass band, guitar, vocals, songwriting, and harmony singing. Melissa also taught music, art, and theater through a music grant for the arts at the Boys and Girls Club. She received an International Bluegrass Music Award for Recorded Event of the Year in 2009 for Bluegrass Bouquet along with a few other ladies on the track "Proud to Be a Daughter of Bluegrass." Melissa has worked in the music industry for a small bluegrass label, Blue Circle Records and Good Home Grown Music publishing.

In addition to music, Melissa is a painter and has a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre. She and her husband live here in Columbia.
